Prayer & Reflection
A short reflection and prayer for this month
June
“Ye are the salt of the earth… Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
Matthew 5:13-16
As summer unfolds and the earth blooms in fullness, June reminds us that what God nurtures in hidden places is not meant to remain concealed forever.
In Matthew 5, Jesus refers to His people as salt and light. Both reveal something of the life He calls us to live, where the absence of each element is sorely felt.
To be salt is to remain distinct, not losing the savour of a life shaped by Christ. In a world that often encourages compromise, distraction, and dullness of spirit, we are called to remain full of the grace, truth, and life He has placed within us; resisting the slow fading of what was meant to remain differentiated and eminent.
To be light is not striving to be noticed, but refusing to be dimmed. It is allowing the life of Christ within us to remain visible in all of the ordinary places.
There is a tendency at times to diminish what God has placed within us, hiding our faith, softening our convictions, or believing that only dramatic testimonies and extraordinary lives can truly reflect His glory. Yet Jesus tells us plainly: a light is not lit to be covered.
What God has kindled in you is meant to be lived openly, right now. We do not need a remarkable life story to shine for Christ. A faithful life, lived sincerely and steadily before God, carries its own light.
So let us walk openly in the grace we have received - in ordinary acts of love, integrity, and perseverance, making His presence visible to all.
Lord Jesus,
thank You for the light You have placed
within us through Your grace.
Forgive us for the times we have hidden
what You have given, through fear, doubt,
or the desire to remain unnoticed.
Keep us from becoming dulled by compromise, distraction, or the desire to blend in.
Teach us to live openly and faithfully before You,
not striving for attention, but refusing
to diminish the work You have done in us.
May the way we speak, love, serve and endure,
bear witness to Your presence within us.
Give us courage to walk sincerely,
wisdom to remain humble,
and hearts that are willing to shine for Your glory.
And as You continue to grow and shape us,
remind us that even the smallest light
brightens the darkness around us.
Amen.
